How was SNGPL formed?
SNGPL was incorporated in 1963, roughly a decade after Pakistan's natural gas industry began with the 1952 discovery of the Sui gas field in Balochistan. While the original Sui field is in the south, SNGPL was formed specifically to build and operate the pipeline network carrying gas north into Punjab and what is now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa — regions with no local gas reserves of their own but with the country's largest population and industrial demand. The company was later listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, with the Government of Pakistan retaining a majority stake through various state holding entities.
What does SNGPL's network cover?
SNGPL operates one of Asia's largest integrated gas transmission and distribution networks, moving gas from southern fields and LNG import terminals through high-pressure transmission pipelines to city-gate stations, and from there through a much finer mesh of medium- and low-pressure distribution pipes into individual streets and homes. Because Punjab and KP have limited gas reserves of their own, an increasing share of the gas flowing through SNGPL's network today is imported Re-gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) blended with declining domestic supply, which is part of why gas pressure and availability can vary by season and time of day.

Why does gas pressure drop in winter?
Heating and geyser use rise across the whole network at the same time in winter, so pressure falls during peak morning and evening hours. This is a network-wide load pattern rather than a fault on your connection, and it does not change the units you are billed for. It is felt more acutely in SNGPL's territory because Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have limited gas reserves of their own, and an increasing share of what flows through the network is imported RLNG.
How do the slabs work on a SNGPL bill?
Gas is billed in slabs, and the rates are set by OGRA rather than by SNGPL. The important consequence is that crossing a slab threshold can move a large part of your consumption to the higher rate, so a small increase in usage can produce a disproportionate jump in the bill. GST on gas is charged at 18%.
