Bill Paid but Still Showing Unpaid? What to Do

Usually a settlement delay, not a lost payment. When to wait, what to check on your receipt, and how to raise it without paying twice.

The short answer

Most of the time this is a settlement delay, not a lost payment. A wallet or bank payment usually reflects within one business day. If it still shows unpaid after that, check the reference number on your receipt matches the bill, then raise it with your company's helpline quoting both the reference number and the transaction ID. Do not pay a second time.

Why a paid bill can still show unpaid

Settlement has not caught up
The payment channel confirms instantly, but the utility's billing record updates later. Payments made close to the due date or over a weekend take longest to appear.
The wrong number was paid
One mistyped digit sends the payment to another connection. Compare the number on your receipt with the number on the bill, digit by digit.
A partial payment
Paying less than the full amount clears part of the bill. The balance remains and can show as outstanding.
You are looking at a new bill
If a new billing cycle has started, the bill on screen may be the current month's, not the one you paid.

What to do, in order

  1. 1

Wait one business day, then check again

Most cases resolve on their own. Checking the same evening is usually too early.

  2. 2

    Find the transaction ID

It is in the wallet or bank app's history and on any counter receipt. This is the single piece of evidence that settles the question.

  3. 3

    Match the reference number

Check the number the payment went against. If it is wrong, contact the payment provider — the utility cannot see a payment made to someone else's account.

  4. 4

Call the helpline with both numbers

Quote the reference number and the transaction ID, and ask for a complaint number.

  5. 5

    Act before the next bill

An unposted payment can reappear as arrears on the following bill, with a late surcharge. Raising it with the receipt before that bill's due date is far easier than unpicking it afterwards.

Do not pay again to make the warning go away

Paying twice creates a credit that is slow to recover and does not fix the original record. Keep the receipt and resolve the posting instead.

Questions

How long does a wallet payment take to show on the bill?

Usually within one business day. Payments near the due date or at weekends can take longer, so check again the next working day before assuming it is lost.

Will I be charged a late surcharge if my payment was on time but posted late?

You should not be, but it can appear on the next bill if the payment was never posted. Keep the transaction ID and raise it before that bill's due date.

What if the complaint is not resolved?

Escalate with your complaint number — to the Pakistan Citizen Portal, then NEPRA's Consumer Affairs Department for electricity. The complaint guide sets out each stage.
